The video itself is an experimental project, as I don’t know exactly how it’ll work out. Layers of images will pass by as the “camera” moves statically. Alternatively, it will start inside the gallery space from a small detail, then move around the buildings and finally down the hill. The video will start down the hill (Regent Rd) and slowly move up. My idea is to create an animated camera move through “3D space” and circulate around the hill and its buildings. The video will visualize the way up to the gallery spaces with a main focus on the City Observatory Complex, Collective’s Temporary Unit building and the City Dome. I will create the video using still photographs connected from Photoshop to After Effects. I want to produce about 2-3 minute video project about Calton Hill and the Collective gallery. Now, I would like to take an opportunity to contextualise my course at Stills to Collective and develop my own artistic practice. During the course I found myself looking differently at all the moving image around me, wondering whether they were done After Effects or not… Way more I would’ve been able to study from YouTube tutorials. Even in a short period of time I gained a lot of information and learned about After Effect’s features and endless possibilities. I found the course really useful and inspiring. In the end we went through rendering the projects, adding sound effects and applying a basic edit, which is something I’m pretty familiar with already. Roto-mask tool, time re-mappin and ‘Particle Playground’ - a tool I was trying to use the very first time I was playing with After Effects.įinally, on the last lesson we worked with motion tracking and attaching a text element to a moving point within a video clip. On the second last lesson I learned how to apply masks to footage and create cutouts, as well as use different applications for effects. Week 4 was dedicated to green-screen – how to composite a figure against an animated background, adjust colour balance and tone, as well as shadows and highlights. We imported a multi-layered diorama from Photoshop into After Effects and created an animated camera move through 3D space. My course has finished and now it’s time to reflect what I’ve learned. On week 3 we looked at arranging 2D layers within a 3D space and creating a sense of spatial depth.
